The House Hunt
I don't dare hope
this one is it --
But I also don't dare hope
that it isn't.
Heartbreak teaches
you both.
We found our haven,
our middle-aged “us” house,
along with all the signs
that it was meant
for our keeping --
Only to have it all
fall away.
Today we look at another --
(we've been looking
for so long -- )
And when the trapdoor
drops,
when the floor
falls away again,
we will not fall as far --
Ambivalence
our trusty trampoline.

So much can be said in only a few words. You do this beautifully in joy and in disappointment.

So true! It’s almost like we have to feign disinterest to get what we want (and to protect our psyche). Miss your wisdom, Martha!
