and unstained frame --
Trees-- rendered
in a graphite-pencil miasma
of roots and cloisonne bark --
portraits without
background or shadow --
an innermost story and
its utter generosity
translated by a
sympathetic hand.
We discuss the ancients:
sequoia, bristlecone pine.
We agree, “There’s nothing
better than a wrecked tree--"
We share the urgency
to capture their expressive
filigree from a hundred
different angles --
We exchange. We engage.
And in parting, we go in peace.
